Mix of the Day: Arni Kristjansson “Boogie Mixx 5”

Soul & Funk

I’ll never forget the first time I heard the very first Boogie Mixx, I was travelling and stuck in my hotel room in a sketchy part of town just waiting to be picked up the next day. I spent a good 6 hours listening to it back to back (on a crappy 128mb MP3 player). It was the expertly mixed combination of classic and obscure boogie tracks that got to me, but what I was truly discovering was an ongoing passion for quality boogie/disco. I had finally found a mix that I felt had no cheesy filler and it was catchy as hell.

Fast forward 5 years and we are now blessed with Volume 5 of this incredible series. This boogie mixx released for valentines day may be my favorite since the original. Its creator Arni (http://www.arnikristjansson.com/) is truly a gentleman and a scholar. He brings elegant funk to light in his mixes, all while completing his PhD in Music Culture at Tokyo University of the Arts. So on both ends the man puts in work and provides stellar atrwork to boot. This mix is so smooth and starts off strong but continually grows into a crescendo of hard slapping boogie basslines and stellar synth work. The last track is my favorite because it brings in a grimier side of the funk. However, this mix is sure to make you smile and make the day go by better. Any fan of disco/boogie needs these in his life pronto! Finally, keep an eye out for a future japanese boogie mix coming soon!
