What melodical madness causes such satisfaction?”

In 2012 the crew at Moovmnt.com will be supplying you with a monthly selection of gems. Since the number 12 is also known as the number for perfection, we have chosen a birthstone for each month. So if you’re in for diamonds by the dozen or rubies in the rough you’re in the right place.

January’s birthstone is the Garnet. It’s name comes from the 14th century Middle English word, gernet, meaning ‘dark red’. Enjoy our first mix of the year and spread the word if you dig this.

How many of them keep you interested every single time? How many of them habitually play you what you want to hear?

No matter how many times I see or hear Montreal resident Guilty (aka: Rilly Guilty) spin, he has never once put on a song I didn’t fully enjoy. Sick track record (pun intended). The man not only feeds you with tunes you’d love, but with tunes you never thought you would have loved. He goes where others wouldn’t dare, kidnapping his audience for a little joy ride.

When he first gave me a physical copy of Golden Sounds Volume 3, I had that house mix bumping in my car for months until it was memorized. Having just found out Volume 4 was released, I immediately told my imaginary secretary to cancel all my imaginary appointments. This mix of soulful house with touches of techno is (as expected) driving me just as wild as the last one, and I will be driving wildly to these tunes so watch out!

Not saying there are 2 copies in existence but let’s just say it’s not on The Streets‘ discogs page or anywhere else on the net.

The Streets’ record label, Locked On (pretty much my favorite UKG label of all-time) sent this to me along with the vinyl 3LP of “Original Pirate Material” back in 2002 because I was writing album reviews for Vice Magazine back in the day. Let’s just say it still ranks as pretty much the best promo package i’ve ever gotten in the mail. It’s pretty crazy that the promo CD has managed to survived in my mess for 10 years now!

It’s my first time ripping it to digital and probably a good move because it’s starting to skip a little. The mix is pretty awesome and weird in certain places, you get classic UKG stuff like DJ Faz, More Fire Crew but you also get tons of US hip-hop like Redman, Busta and Trick Daddy. Considering this was made in 2002 it’s really representative of how big the Grime movement with people like Wiley and Skepta was going to be. I hope you enjoy this little piece of UKG history.

One for the bass boys!

I read about this classic mixtape through Kutmah who named it as one of his favorite mixes of all-time. So I decided to dig it out and found a copy floating out there. The mixtape is from the late 90′s and was distributed through Fat Beats. It featured Babu of the World Famous Beat Junkies and Kankick, legendary but under appreciated producer from the West Coast.

This is serious stuff right here. I don’t mean to sound too nostalgic but it’s always awesome to go back to mixes that are pre-2005, you know there’s no Serato involved. Just pure DJ skills without any training wheels.

Looking back on the myriad of ways that the genre now known quite loosely as ‘bass music’ has mutated, one of the key figures in its evolution would have to be Bristol’s Rob Ellis, better known simply as Pinch. His fascination with what the outer limits of the dub sound can achieve, has made him a distinct figure within the fluid group of like-minded dubstep musicians that defined the so-called Bristol sound.

“I am a supporter of the sound of vinyl and the cultural associations I make with this format so it was important to me – even if I do ultimately end up abandoning my beloved format one day – to stick by my guns and record the mix like this. I also made the whole mix start and finish in the same spot – meaning that the entire DJ mix can work as a loop if you put it on repeat. I really like the idea of certain kinds of music existing in its own infinite context and setting up the mix to loop like that was playing entirely into that idea.” – Pinch

The mix itself combines all of Pinch’s loves, a blend of both melodic mood-pieces, driving dub-techno and the odd mid-range bass wobble masterfully planted to maximum effect. This is all peppered through in post-production with little vocal samples, mostly supplied by Bristol MC Jakes, that fully form the mix, like the grain in wood, supplying body, making it more than just a sum of its constituent parts.

This is a really intriguing find actually because it is sort of the missing link between the US Garage sound and the birth of UK Garage in the mid-90′s.

Matt “Jam” Lamont was one of the two members of Tuff Jam, pretty much the founding fathers of UK Garage. This recording is from 1993 and Tuff Jam productions started surfacing in 1994-95. So when they say that UKG started out from DJ’s playing US Garage dubs at faster speeds to give it that typical bumpy feel this is a perfect example right here!

This mix has survived all these years and after its transfer from a TDK cassette, we can all enjoy it! There’s no tracklist but you’ll recognise some stuff in there, some Kings of Tomorrow, early Todd Edwards, etc..

I’ve been listening to this mix as a reading/Sunday morning clean-up companion for months now. Effectively living up to his name, the homie John-John dug up some massive nugs and fashioned this mix for us the way a master goldsmith would assemble his finest engagement ring: with a keen eye for quality material and the steady hand of a seasoned veteran. As I’d previously mentioned in the Crema Púrpura article, there are a couple of major players in Latin America’s musical heritage that, due to their own machinations, leave many countries’ local scenes up to their own devices. Beautiful Argentina has produced numerous top-notch bands that were unable to break out on an international scale. This compilation is a homage to the forgotten but never lost, and the love that is left in their wake.

So happy the boys from Africa Hitech decided to share this with the people. They just got done with their North American SUREFIRE Sound tour that saw them kill the US and Canada along with guests like Sepalcure, Distal and the homeboy Dibia$e. I had the pleasure to play with Africa Hitech on their Montreal date along with the Boomclap Soundsystem bwoys so this recorded set is a great reminder of how awesome it was to have Spacek & Mark Pritchard in town.

Myself and Guilty had the pleasure of playing with David aka Pearson Sound / Ramadanman last spring in Montreal and it was great to witness a guy that’s as interesting behind the decks and he is behind the production board. And lord knows he’s one of the dopest producers of these past few years to come out of the new wave of electronic music, whatever sub-sub-genre people are calling it this week. This time he tackles the timeless series called “Essential Mix” on BBC Radio 1. 47 tracks ranging from house, techno, dubstep, garage. Strictly that real shit though!

To put this short and sweet, this was probably the best “Live” / “New-kind of Dj-ing” set i’ve seen so far. Flying Lotus, the new wonderkid on the block rocked it for a little over an hour with a bass heavy, electronic, abstract hip-hop set. It was like seeing J-Dilla on crack! I mean come on!!!… some Aphex Twin, Jay Dee, Burial, Busta Rhymes and lots of his productions. Go buy his new Los Angeles LP out on Warp now!

Really loving this mix by two of my Montreal homies, Guilty & Fiend. It’s a promo mix for their monthly night at a lovely spot in town called Royal Phoenix. Both dudes definitely share a love for all things 80′s boogie, disco and soul. (who doesn’t!)

The concept of the mixtape is actually really cool. Lots of forgotten 80′s poppy disco jams, a good tape doesn’t always need to have the rarest tracks on it. This one does the work with stuff like Gwen McRae, Chemise, Toto (!), S.O.S Band and so on. The tracklist is revealed by your hosts right on the rape. The whole thing kinda takes you back in the area of clubs handing out promo tapes for their upcoming nights…

It wasn’t very easy to keep the quality high, but we did our best are very pleased to present to you: The Future of Funk 2. Sit back and enjoy another 40 minute ride down the nasty side!

The Jazz Amnesty Sound System (or J.A.S.S.) is run by Montreal djs Andy Williams & Sweet Daddy Luv. With an honest admiration, appreciation and awe for the dedication and skills of its honored players, these veteran selectors delve deep into the rich history of jazz in an attempt to weave its story. There is the idea of what ‘jazz’ is that follows it through the changes over the years. From its humble beginnings at the mouth of the Mississippi, through big band, swing, bop, cool, avant-garde, dancefloor, free, fusion, funk, electronic and out into the world where jazz has been assimilated and combined with many non-western musical styles. The Jazz Amnesty Sound System will be playing the classics that helped define all these jazz sub-genres as well as prime examples of sheer beauty created by artists that often get overlooked. If you dig jazz you’ll dig J.A.S.S.

When I come across an all vinyl mix, the likelihood of me listening to it goes up by 100%. The fact that this one comes from UK underground guru T Williams made it a no brainer. And this one is reFRESHing. Navigating through classic house, broken-beat future jazz, and UK garage and grime, T Williams maintains a pace and precision that should be studied. He shows you don’t have to jam 50 digitally spun tracks into an hour long mix for it to be a banger, a very valuable lesson in this fast-paced age of music. 100% recommended.

From Andy Williams (J.A.S.S Co-Founder): “I’m very proud to be joining forces with Lew Braden (a.k.a “Sweet Daddy Luv“) on this project J.A.S.S.The work and effort that has gone into these mixes, beats, and story-telling is something I’ve been waiting for since the folding of Operation Jazz. I’m sure this edition of Ex-Pat J.A.S.S. will find a special place in your hearts”

“In the 50′s and 60′s American jazz musicians expatriated to Europe to find something that they couldn’t in their homeland. European audiences appreciated jazz (both artistically and financially) on a level not often seen in the U.S. at that time. When American soldiers brought jazz over during the two World Wars it struck a chord with many European youths that still resonates to this day. Add to this the fact that the specter of racism wasn’t as prevalent in Europe as it was in the U.S., where African-American jazz musicians were still dealing with Jim Crow laws, racists standards in the mainstream media and unjust (often brutal) treatment at the hands of the law.

This mix focuses on the 1960′s exodus of free jazz musicians that were struggling to get their new thing understood (or even heard) in America, but found an open-minded and accepting audience in Europe where these musicians could hone their skills and perfect their new approaches to jazz music.”

Music has evolved in leaps and bounds over the past hundred years and the harbinger of many of these changes is technology. The invention of the microphone changed music, the ability to amplify sound changed music, the ability to record sound changed music, radio changed music, records changed music, synthesizers changed music, computers changed music, the internet changed music; and all of these things would not have existed without the supreme technological advancement of our age, ELECTRICITY.

This mix is a focus on artists from the 60′s and 70′s that were utilizing electronic instruments and electronic sounds as a major part of their composition and performance. Don’t be fooled, just because machines were incorporated into the music doesn’t mean these tracks aren’t top drawer jazz; only talented musicians taking it to the next level… and it doesn’t hurt that it’s a little funky either.

These mix series aren’t always my thing. Too many of them come from producers who have no business doing the dj thing. Just predictable stuff you know. Well, this isn’t one of those times. Karizma has been one of my favorite house producers for years but behind the decks the guy is also an absolute beast! Don’t miss this instalment of the FACT series.

One of the world’s premiere house producers for well over a decade now, Karizma has released on countless labels – amongst them R2, Defected and Objektivity – and has a serious arsenal of classics under his belt, from soulful vocal house anthems to heavyweight instrumentals; skewed hip-hop to spiraling drum psychedelia. Equally revered by house veterans and up-and-coming iconoclasts, Karizma is quite simply that guy. And after years of asking, we’ve finally managed to get him to contribute to our mix series.

Absolutely great mix from Fatoosan who I met this summer with Lefto when they were both on vacation in Quebec. They both took the the time to discover the sights, smells and sounds Montreal had to offer (check out Lefto’s road movie here). Whenever we had time to talk about music, they both always wanted me to hook them up with some music from here! So of course I told them about all the great hip-hop and beats stuff we have over here… She’d been telling me that she would do a Canada only mix and here it is!

Fatoosan: “I went to Canada and remember mostly the whales, the nice people and the good vibes

I was completely amazed by the bilingual skills of the people living in Montreal and discover there a great crew (thanks to Lexis | MusicIsMySanctuary.com), the Alaclair Ensemble, who can rap switching so easily between French and English! I was interested to discover the aboriginal rapper Samian, the Atach Tatuq crew who has a female mc and that some bands I’ve known for a long time were actually Canadian!

This mix is made of new school, crunky and golden age hip hop. It doesn’t cover everything of course, sorry if your favorite Canadian rapper is not here “

Enjoy!

via XLR8R: UK producer Altered Natives (a.k.a. Danny Yorke) certainly isn’t a shy man. From his candid interviews to his rough-and-tumble house productions, Yorke operates without paying much attention to particular music scenes or worrying about ruffling feathers. In the next few weeks he’ll be releasing a new album, Tenement Yard Vol. 2, a full-length which, much like its predecessor, features track after track of hard-edged, bass-heavy, no-frills house. Altered Natives’ music is mercilessly effective, an aspect that readily apaprent on this exclusive mix he’s assembled for the XLR8R podcast series. Operating as a sort of showcase for Yorke’s Eye4Eye imprint, the podcast features several tracks from relative newcomers while also placing Altered Natives firmly in the spotlight, as more than half of the mix consists of his own tunes—not that we’re complaining. It’s a safe bet that anyone who likes their dance music dark and dirty won’t be either.

69ers is a collection of trippy songs that all have one thing in common, their release year. I tried to explore every aspect of 1969 with a worldwide perspective. At that time, a lot of psychedelic bands were coming out of Argentina, France, Korea and pretty much everywhere. In Germany, the birth of a very important movement called krautrock was also taking place. Protopunk bands were slowly making surface in the UK while funk and soul was getting more and more attention in the US. The Woodstock festival took place in 1969, bringing together many musical legends. It is also where J.D. Smart, the drummer who played with Mountain made one of the most popular live recorded drum break while performing Long Red. “You out there? Louder!”

I tried to concentrate my selection on freak sounding tunes containing heavy breaks. As a matter of fact, the first break that I ever sampled was from one of my dad’s 45 which was Honky Tonk Woman by the Rolling Stones, also from 1969. I intentionally left out well-known songs from my selection, although you will probably be familiar with some bands that are part of the mix. This project was put together in several months of break diggin’ and obscure sound sorting. I mainly focused the musical direction on progressive and popsike rock, while avoiding known funk breaks such as Soul Pride by James Brown.

Some of my favourite soul records (Isaac Hayes, Dionne Warwick, Marva Whitney, etc.) are from ‘69, but The Breakadelic Lullabies was an exercise for me that consisted in forgetting what I already knew about that magnificent year. Even though the Meters, the Mohawks and the Family Stone were at their peak, this was not meant to be a funk oriented project, although there is something funky to it. I also excluded Jazz from my final picks, but kept the sound experience filled with soulful, bluesy and jazzy vibes. Hope you enjoy the trip!
