Sevdee vs Jean Leloup “L’Amour est sans pitié” – Remix EP

For those who aren’t from Quebec, let me explain real quick who Jean Leloup is. Is our kind of folk / gypsy answer to a mix of Beck and Ol’ Dirty Bastard. I say ODB cause Leloup likes to use akas too… John The Wolf, Massoud Al-Rachid, Jean Leclerc and so on.

When I was a wee lad growing up in my neighborhood called Plateau I used to see Leloup on the regular at the convenience store, he would come to buy milk and stuff in his bare feet. So needless to say i’ve liked the dude since. Oh, and musically, he probably has been the most interesting and true artist in the past 20 years here…

There’s also this other guy who you should know by now… my partner in crime from fridays at Blizzarts mr. SEVDEE. He just finished an entire REMIX album from some of Leloup’s dopest tracks. C’est le REEEEMIX!

Best Michael Jackson Flips & Edits

Best Michael Jackson Flips & Edits

I’m not going to try and say anything that hasn’t been mentionned already. Quite simply, MJ was without a doubt the most talented and complete entertainer of our generation.

We are not here to judge the man on his off the stage persona, because A) none of us know the facts B) imagine what it must have been like being in the spotlight from the age of 6-7 years. So I think all of us should focus on his legacy which is the countless timeless jams!

A lot of people have been reminiscing and listing their favorite songs, with good reason of course… but I thought i’d give you something different and post my favorite Remixes & Edits (and one cover just for the hell of it)

Nathaniel (Aloe Blacc) – La la la

Nathaniel (Aloe Blacc) – La la la

Officially, new best “Bump & Grind” song ever! (or close to)

I was doing my weekly rounds of the dope blogs out there and one of my first stops was Moovmnt.com from the Netherlands; always a must for dope next level niceness.

My mans uncovered some early Aloe Blacc tracks, before he was signed to Stones Throw, when he went under the name Nathaniel. Welll…. to keep a story short this officially a contender for one of the best “between the sheets” type tracks! It has now overtaken “Freak Me” by Silk and “You Remind me” by R Kelly in the overly cheesy but awesome category!!!

oh yeah, and lets not forget “Pony” by Ginuwine…. anyways, turn off the lights, put on the silk bathrobe and enjoy

Vinyl Rip – “Lougin with Jacko”

Vinyl Rip – “Lougin with Jacko”

For those who don’t know, the very thought of transferring a record collection to digital is a major pain. Sometimes I grab a stack and do a few but it takes an hour and you’ve got like 6 done… it sucks

But… i’ve come up with the idea of doing one a week and picking some of my favorites records that most peeps have never heard of. Don’t worry i’m not going for that whole this was on a Mexican pressing and there are only 2 in the world. Prince has the other one… No no, just dope shit I have lying around.

MJ vs Banzai Republic “Lougin with Jacko”

First of all I remember paying like 20$ for this record when it came out… and its got one song on it! Damn, thats pre-Internet when you could get anything for 20 cents. Well, it was worth it… cause I own this mysterious Michael Jackson Edit, in all its dubbed out, midtempo, jazzy glory. (you have to wait til’ minute 3 for the gorgeous beat drop)

BASEMENT SOUL – Guest Mix

Basement Soul is a really cool and quiet guy from Montreal.

I met him through Scott C at the Goods and my weekly night at Blizzarts. I’ve had him rock the spot a couple times at “THE BRIDGE” a couple times too. A couple weeks ago he hands me a copy of his new project. An absolutely gorgeous package with 5 mix CDs full of hand made drawings and little notes. You can just feel the attention and love that he put into it.

I will be uploading the rest of the series and showing you pictures of the awesomeness of the homemade packaged box set.

“Casa Bey / The Ecstatic” – New Record!

The new MOS record is coming out and tracks have started surfacing here and there. I am only giving you one. I was 15 seconds into and starting looking for stuff to break in my house! Mos Def recycled one of my favorite Madlib beats from his Beatkonducta India series (which I played in pod #003 I think). Ouch!!!!

FAT FREDDY’S DROP – New album!!!!

FAT FREDDY’S DROP – New album!!!!

Awww shit! Fat Freddy’s Drop are back with a new record.

Fat Freddy’s Drop is by far one of the bands that I’ve pushed the most in Dj sets, I swear that half the time I’ve played one of their tracks people come to ask me what’s playing. Their last full LP came out in 2005 and sadly they haven’t been really putting out anything since. Even the lead singer Joe Dukie hasn’t really been doing a ton of outside collaborations.

At last here it is, “Dr. Boondigga & The Big BW“, the long awaited return of the masters of New Zealand dub-soul-ragga.

Wax Poetics

Wax Poetics

Any self-respecting music nerd knows about the monthly Wax Poetics magazine. After 2-3 weeks you start expecting the new one. Then around 25 days you start asking your magazine shops if they’ve received it, then you find on the net who are the lead features for this months’ issue. And then boom, the fix is in your hands!

I’ve been hooked on Wax Po for about 3 years and religiously collect every issue (like George’s dad collects the TV Guide in Seinfeld). If you haven’t heard about this magazine and you like soul, funk, jazz, hip-hop and whatever else in between do yourself a favor and check it out.

This month the feature is Roger Troutman, lord of the talkbox… if it wasn’t for Zapp & Roger “Nothing but a G Thang” wouldn’t exist and T-Pain would have never gotten on that boat.

PODCAST : Moonstarr x Resident Advisor

I’m a big fan of the Resident Advisor website, especially their podcasts. They usually have a pretty dope blend of electronic music, anything from tech, abstract, dubby and and so on…

I’m also a big fan of Moonstarr, our favorite 6′6″ adopted Montrealer. Purveyor of dope beats, mr. Moon is one of the nicest guys in town…

Nice pod with a Quebec flavoured intro too…

Lexis’ Obamafication Edit

Lexis’ Obamafication Edit

Thought i’d hook you up with a track I sort of mashed together in my last podcast. The track called “Stand on the Word” is a gospel track from the mid-80s that was remixed by Larry Levan, one of NYC’s legendary DJs. The track was updated with a dub version from a producer called Hot Coins but the original track is just such an uplifting track that I though what could be better than slapping Obama’s victory speech in Chicago on there…

Kind of the same idea as when Mr.Fingers added MLK’s “I have a dream” speech on his classic “Can you feel it”. So enjoy, download, rip, burn… Hopefully a lot of my DJ friends will play it. The question  is: what do you play after???!

Arthur Russell

Arthur Russell

Arthur Ruseell

Ok, i’m not gonna front and pretend to be a big expert on the subject but lately i’ve been checking out a lot of Arthur Russell’s works. First off, before even going into the music he does have a very unique background. Classically trained cellist and composer from the corn fields in Iowa moves to SF and NYC and starts collaborating with avant-garde musicians like Phillip Glass and David Byrne. Then goes on to be a fixture in the New York disco scene collaborating with Nicky Siano, Larry Levan, Francois K. His disco productions are raw, skewed and definetly more cerebral than most dance music.

I’m just starting to get into some of his solo stuff and it is some of the most haunting, personal, abstract shit i’ve ever heard.

MIMS digs ONRA

MIMS digs ONRA

MIMS, Onra, MusicIsMySanctuary, Music Is My Sanctuary, Podcast

Onra is definetly a major player in the new wave of upcoming producers à la Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, Samiyam, Bullion and so on. I do find that he has a bit more versatility than most of these producers though. Onra can definetly bust some neck snapping electronic hiphop / future funk schizo beats but at the same time he does have quite a few productions that are more organic and touch on the whole disco vibe more in the vibe of Truss’Me, Pilooski and others. Anyways, if you didn’t know yet… Now you know fool! Onra son!

The Abstract, The Chef, Busabus & Weezy “Renaissance Rap”

The Abstract, The Chef, Busabus & Weezy “Renaissance Rap”

QTip, Renaissance Remix, Remix, Download, Lil' Wayne, Busta Rhymes

QTip, Busta Rhymes, Raekwon and Lil’Wayne bring back the grand old tradition of the possee track!

Heard this yesterday for the first time and i’m on listen #23 already. This is another reason why the “internet era” can be so empowering for music. 10 years ago you would have had to wait a couple months for this to come out, tape it off the radio or something (although I miss doing that) or have this one friend who just came back from NYC so all you have is the shitty version with Dj Clue on top of it screaming “Wooohooo, new shit!!! Clueee!!!”

Nowadays, the guys probably emailed each others’ verses yesterday and it’s out today… it’s a beautiful time.

My Favorite Record of All-Time!

My Favorite Record of All-Time!

Picking one record out of all the timeless ones is pretty close to mission impossible. It becomes more a question of which is the one record which means the most to you, helped you get over heart-break, awkwardness of your teenage years and so on… I’ll start with the runner-up: listening to A Tribe Called Quest’s “Low End Theory” (cassette of course) as a 13 year old pretty much defined what musical path I would take after. So, that’s definetly my teenage years defining record.

The overwhelming winner however is and always will be the soundtrack to “The Harder They Come” (1972 – Island Records). It is pretty much the first record I remember listening to as a kid and if that doesn’t steer you on the right path musically, I don’t know what will. My uncle made me listen to this record when I was about 8 and it’s all I would listen to in this giant walkman that weighed about 15 pounds and was about half my leg.

The album has 12 tracks (but 2 of them are there twice! always found that hillarious) and pretty much 8 of the 10 tracks are stone cold classics! 2 of the Jimmy Cliff tracks (“Many rivers to cross” and “The Harder they come“) are the kind of songs you send into space and hope that someone green finds it. Its pretty damn close to some of the best things the human race can come up with. (Apart from the pyramids and hmm… Corn Dogs!) After that you have some of the most classic roots reggae and ska tracks out there, “Draw your breaks” (Scotty), “Rivers of Babylon” (The Melodians), “Shanty Town” (Desmond Dekker), “Pressure Drop” (Toots & the Maytals).

So come to think of it picking my favorite record of all time was pretty damn easy. The Harder they come, hands down. Big time credit is due to my uncle for introducing me to it…

Sample Heat – “Who Shot Ya”

Masia One “Pulau”

Maisa One

My homeboy Felix who’s been in China for the past two years put me on to Masia not too long ago and I finally got around to checking it out and wasn’t dissapointed! The first cut on the sampler of her PULAU album (which means ISLANDS in Malaysian) is such a catchy summery nugget. Definetly makes me pissed that summer is actually over and that in a half second itll be -30 in Montreal… damn!!! She told me that the track was actually recorded on the coldest day of last year which is hard to believe.

Keep an ear out for Masia One, a perfect representation of that true global sound…

Back to 1995

I love the mid-90’s house vibe. Very funky, deep and shuffly. Kerri Chandler, Mood II Swing, Masters at Work, etc… This mix touches on the very beginning of the whole UK Garage movement which eventually evolved into 2Step, Grime, Dubstep and so on. Lots of essential classics on here as well as some I had never heard before!

NEW Raphael Saadiq LP!

I remember buying the CASSETTE single to Toni Tony Tone’s “If I had no loot” back in 1992 in Florida when I was like shit, I dunno…. 12? Raphael Saadiq has been one of my favorites ever since. To me’s he’s the R&B equivalent of Q-Tip in hip-hop: they both have such distinct and recognisable voices that if you love them, you’ll like any song they put out. So this is Saadiq’s new LP, out in mid-september… he could be singing the yellow pages for all I care but he probably wont, but it would kick ass.

One more thing: Is it me or does Raphael Saadiq kinda look like Don Cheadle?

Angel Dust

Little sample heat right here. Well, actually it’s a little more than a sample use, its a complete A to Z lift. Kayne took Gil Scott-Heron’s “Angel Dust” and didn’t do a whole lot to it but he did press record on Common and The Game’s MICs I guess… No seriously, not to hate on good ol’ Kayne but he does rely a hell of a lot on the use of samples and when he does, I find he doesn’t do a whole lot to it. I know a bunch of producers who could have done better with that track… but they didn’t so I guess thats the whole point.

Geez, enough rambling… I think i’m tired. Point is: the beat is bangin’ ok?!

Issa Bagayogo with some Mali Heat!

Isaa Bagayogo, Mali Koura

This track will be a smash at my mom’s new years party. She’s gonna act all cool and pretend she discovered it herself without giving her son any credit, yeah… she’s like that. Jusss kidding ma!

Ok, i’m not gonna front, I didn’t know any of Issa Bagayogo’s stuff but this track from his new record on the very big world music label Six Degrees is enough to make me want to hear more. It’s definetly got that Mali vibe (from what I’ve heard from there), an undeniable mix of african music with very subtle electronic undertones…

Walk on by, Isaac

Another music legend is gone, R.I.P. Issac Hayes.

Singer, musician, arranger, producer, film score composer, grammy and academy award winner, owner of a basketball team (that was wayyyy before Jay-Z decided to buy the New Jersey Nets), and of course, the voice of South Park’s Chef.

Hayes had a very productive and influential (he did the epic and orchestral 10 minute soul songs a couple of years before Barry White did it) career with close to 30 albums and/or soundtracks released, 3 grammy awards, most of them on the legendary Memphis soul label, Stax Records, home to Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Booker T & the MG’s and others…

Originally Hayes was the in-house songwriter and producer for most of the Stax hits in the 60’s but following Otis Redding’s tragic plane crash in 1967, he was put forced into the role of the saviour of Stax records.

Q-Tip is bizack

Q-Tip

Yup. It’s true. That’s right. Huh-huh. Q-Tip’s new record is coming out.

You’re an intelligent person so there’s no need for me to tell you how important Q-Tip is a major reason why most of us who grew up in the nineties started listening to hip-hop in the first place. What you do need to know is that the man is still relevant in today’s music landscape and that he’s tired of hearing about A Tribe Called Quest reunions.

Check out the really good SPIN interview that came out a couple weeks ago. The album titled “The Renaissance” features collaborations with D’Angelo, Andre 3000, Norah Jones and Raphael Saadiq.

Steady Vibe’n (R.I.P)

Back in 2000, me and Senyo teamed up to bring one of the first UKG and 2step radio shows in North America. We held it down weekly on Sweet-ting.com for 2 years.

I remember finishing football practise every wednesday night and grabbing my records and heading out to ghetto but lovely RCA Victor Studios out in St-Henri. (Lots of times we had to throw rocks in the small window of the studio for somehow to open the door because the buzzer was broken). Enjoy this little blast from the past… before Grime, before Dubstep there was… UKG!
