Back in November we got the idea of doing a 24 hour (straight) marathon of strictly vinyl with some of our favorite DJ’s. 15 DJ’s came through, people like Jacques Greene, Christian Pronovost, Poirier and tons of others all came through and played amazing music.

We expected having tons of fun amongst ourselves but the really amazing surprise was the fact that 4,000 people tuned in! People from all over the world check out the web event at different parts of the day; we had people stay on with us for over 12 hours!

So, this February 3rd we do it again.

Live on www.MusicIsMySanctuary.com (Audio / Video Stream)
Starting at 8pm on February 3rd (Montreal, Eastern Time)
Finishing at 8pm on February 4th

As surprising as it might seem, self-promoting involves quite a creative process. I quickly learned how visual support plays an important role in people’s perception of a weekly gig no matter how good the musical content is. Sometimes, trying to make something look appealing while staying true to what you do can be challenging.

As my record collection expands, I realized how much good music I have that I don’t get to play in clubs or elsewhere. Some tunes, I have so much respect for that I wouldn’t even bother trying to sample them. As a result, I met up with my long time friend Lo Bono to think about how we could get these pieces the attention it deserves through video making. Lo Bono is a young independent film director, who is also a music lover that understands the powerful synergy that can have well orchestrated images on music. We got together and went through a stack of about 40 records (you know the ones that narrate stories and evoke images) and selected a few rare and less rare cuts to brainstorm on.

This is how Wax Office was born. We have absolutely no copyright on the material we use but we do it with the intention of making people discover wonderful music through the medium of short films. We plan to release a series of unofficial music videos starring real people instead of actors, as we thought it would make it a more interesting exercise. We will be projecting our very first creation entitled “Say Goodbye to me” at ExpoArts tomorrow. Here is the teaser and a link to the facebook event page. Hope you can make it!

MYMANHENRI
BADBADNOTGOOD [live]
SIMAHLAK
SCOTT C

Once again, we meet and celebrate the life and music of James Dewitt Yancey aka J Dilla, who passed away on Feb 10 2006. Those of you who have attended in previous years know that the vibe on this night is unprecedented, something you can feel, and we urge you not to miss it.

Back again are Montreal’s own SCOTT C & SIMAHLAK playing music from Dilla’s extensive catalogue, as well as rare and unreleased gems. We’re also joined by MYMANHENRI from 92bpm.com and based jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD playing a live set of inspired J Dilla covers in their first Montreal appearance.

This is going to be a night to remember, so please mark it down!

Residents Wyld Stallyns (Construct & Harmsworth) welcome Wolfey and yours truly at Le Belmont, one of the dopest rooms in MTL to throwdown some beats! I’m pretty excited about this one because I get to do a type of set I don’t do very often!

The night is all about the crunchier and bassy side of the beats. So expect some glitchy stuff, some 8bit stuff and more Electronic weirdo, but danceable beats! There is tons of good stuff in that genre coming out these last 3-4 years with people like Rustie, Dibiase, Flylo, Eero Johannes, Flako, Samiyam and so on…

So no wonky, no future garage, no dubstep.

Robert Glasper is coming back to Montreal in february and will be playing tracks from his soon to drop record.

One of the biggest rising stars in contemporary jazz, globetrotting Texas pianist Robert Glasper, will be playing at the Gesù in Montreal. His freespirited, ethereal and generous music, a blend of gospel, rap and hip hop dominated by jazz, is utterly irresistible and seductive. He’ll present a musical panorama featuring songs from a new album due in January, Black Radio.

In case you haven’t heard about it and are still considering your options for December 31st, we’re stoked to let you know that we’ll be bringing the best in Grime, Bass music and Juke/Footwork at Who da Coldest NYE! What’s Footwork you say? Why, we’re glad you asked! Footwork (or Juke, let’s not get into that…) is a style of high-speed Ghetto-House straight out of Chicago. It’s 160BPM, features lots of skippy drums and sounds like Aliens trying to make Jungle out of House Music and Hip-Hop but getting it all wrong. We’re sure all of you wonderful Music is My Sanctuary readers will love it (if you don’t already!) and we decided it’d be in the Holiday spirit to list our five favorite tunes of the year! Enjoy and see you on New Year’s Eve!

1. DJ Rashad & Gant Man – Heaven Sent

A lot of Footwork can seem noisy and anti-musical at first glance since the genre is based on unorthodox rhythms and very short musical phrases but 2011 saw the style expand into more melodic song structures both abroad and in Chicago. This Bangs & Works 2 stand out from Juke Godfather DJ Rashad and scene leader Gant Man combined a G-Funk inspired bassline to straight up ghetto house drumming before exploding into triplet drum patterns that have come to define Footwork in the EDM world. It’s everything that makes Footwork special: the jacking energy of house, the rumbling 808s of Trap music, the sinewy grooves of funk and the weirdness you get from a community of like-minded musicians creating something special for a local community that doesn’t give an F about the outside world. Plus, it’s pretty damn sexy: if you need to convince your girl that Juke is the shit, this is the track to do it with.

2. DJ Earl – Had My Way

The influence of Chicago Hip-Hop producers and emcees can be found all over Footwork’s DNA. While national House and Hip-Hop alliances haven’t always worked out for the best, with neither scene trusting the other, the Chicago underground has proven to have no such qualms mixing dance and rap. Here, No I.D’s sample science gets updated for the 21st century with classic records getting chopped, flipped, screwed and reverse engineered into stuttering compositions that re-imagine the city’s soul and blues traditions for a rough new era. Meanwhile, shades of classic ghetto house and Twista’s rapid-fire Midwestern music shine through the hi-speed rhythms and 808s. Play this one for your true-school Hip-Hop homies and watch ‘em freak out!

3. Rashad – Welcome 2 da Chi

One of the great things about Footwork these days is how it re-imagines new school rap music as pure dance floor heat without getting bogged down by Hip-Hop traditions. Whereas NY crate-diggers were once the unchallenged masters of the sampler, Chicago producers are re-inventing the game by using rap itself as source material. Here, Rashad chops up Jay & Kanye’s 2011 anthem “Niggas in Paris” as a battle track before hitting you with MASSIVE London influenced sub-low frequencies, keeping all the roughneck energy that makes Trap rap so dope but with bass music precision. OK, we’re cheating here since you couldn’t (officially) get your hands on this track in 2011 but c’mon: this Juke-version is so much better than the overproduced original.

4. DJ Spinn – LOL

A good Footwork set is all about shifting patterns and going from straight up high-speed bootyhouse to half-time experiments to tracks built entirely on triplets. Somehow DJ Spinn’s LOL manages this all in one track. Built on another jazzy soul loop obliterated into atoms, it’s a surprisingly musical moment that have had a few people bandying about words like “deep” and “intelligent” like this was the 90s. While it’s important to show the world that Juke/Footwork is a versatile musical movement rather than a single-idea fad, we’re not fans of this sort of division. Good music is good music: no need for subgenres on this one, particularly given how much it bangs on a booming system.

5. Leatherface – I Wish

2010 was the year Footwork broke outside of Chicago but 2011 was the year it truly went international. Producers from all over the world started not only creating Juke but also adapting it to their own needs. While a metric ton of UK beatmakers went on to fuse Footwork’s drum patterns to a Bass music foundation, the genre also found fans out in France where producers such as Leatherface and his Nightmare Juke Squad delivered authentic Footwork bangers…with a twist. On I Wish, we see several of the genre’s competing elements pushed to extremes with ultra-precise choppage meeting a Hip-Hop ready sample source. A whole lot of people are focusing on London’s eclectic music scene right now but Paris’s rich Hip-Hop tradition both in music and dance has made it the ideal location for Juke to begin it’s international takeover and with tracks like this – Chicago better watch out!

Saturday marks the birthday of one of Montreal’s longest running monthly nights. The 6th Anniversary of the monthly POW WOW night with resident bad boys Ephiks and Naes!

I’ve had the pleasure to play a few months back and it’s pretty much a guaranteed good time every time, probably the only night these days where you can hear quality hip-hop. Yes, the classics but also the weirder joints too!

For the occasion, the boys will be releasing their new mixtape called The Magic Touche DJ Mixtapes focused on remixes and mashups are not something that really interests me too much these days but these guys do it verrrry well. Here is the first example of what’s to come on The Magic Touche

***************************************************

Nearly nine years ago Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek began bonding over their shared passion for the seemingly disparate spheres of bubbling Detroit techno, soul and fierce Jamaican digital dancehall. First came an appearance by Spacek on Pritchard’s Troubleman album, then the collaborative track “Turn It On” released on Sonar Kollektive. It was when they both, by pure coincidence, found themselves living in Australia that the connection was cemented. Africa Hitech is the moniker which represents both Steve and Mark’s love for all things progressive within music, whilst acknowledging that the roots of much of today’s popular music can be traced directly back to Africa.

Pritchard had already begun to narrow the gaps between the pair’s beloved genres under his Harmonic 313 moniker and Spacek was eager to explore new directions in both his production and vocals after the disbandment of his eponymous band and the worldwide acclaim of his Dilla-asisted “Dollar” single. The first widely heard fruits of the duo’s labor was the striking single “Blen”. A penetrating exercise in minimalist dancehall swordplay, it was released under the intriguing name Africa Hitech which immediately seemed to encompass both the influences and ambitions of the newly christened 2-piece.

While Spacek’s predatory ragamuffin chat on “Blen” was a pleasant shock to many, Pritchard’s compositions straddled UK garage and ruff-neck Kingston logic just as deftly. More of the same could have easily followed, but instead came the “Hitecherous” vinyl double-pack. Nodding heavily towards classic grime, techno and even (on “Too Late”) smooth, futuristic lover’s rock, the expansive EP shed some light on where the duo were headed. As well as sculpting their own vision of future music, they would also stop do update the genres they loved along the way.

The result is 93 Million Miles, an unflinchingly ambitious product of international globe-trotting that carves a new fault-line into the rapidly expanding terrain of “bass music”…or whatever it’s being called this week. The first point of introduction for many will have been the Ini Kamoze-sampling behemoth “Out In The Streets”, immediately championed by Flying Lotus, Untold, Toddla T, Benji B, Scratcha DVA and featured in “Wild Hundreds”, a documentary about Chicago’s underground Juke/Footwork dance community. A brilliant exercise in artful international data-splicing, “Out In The Streets” combines the ghosts of 1980s Jamaica with the youth-culture explosion of juke.

While there are several incredibly unique footwork deconstructions on the album, other tracks like “Our Luv” and the album’s title track look to Chicago house and Detroit Techno while Spacek’s combative patois returns drenched in sinister vocoder tones on the grime-meets-dancehall bubbler “Do You Wanna Fight?”. Still more explorations come with the album’s second half when afrobeat, dub and deep jazz experimentalism are all added to the already potent cocktail. For many this ambitious cultural intake could spell disaster, but in the hands of Pritchard and Spacek it becomes a surprising, fulfilling journey aimed squarely at the dedicated listener rather than simply at the dancefloor. Given the duo’s breadth of experience and exquisite levels of taste and ability, it could go no other way.

For the 15th edition, Karnival is keeping the pace as one of the nights with the best bookings in Montreal (Rupture, Kentaro, Kode9, Mungo’s Hi-Fi). Where would we be without The Goods & Karnival monthlies! For this one, Music Is My Sanctuary is teaming up with Poirier to bring you one of my favorite producers for just about 10 years: Russia’s DJ VADIM!

One look at Vadim’s discogs page and you realize how impressive his track record of quality and diversity truly is. One of the earliest stars of the Ninja Tune label (and one who introduced me to that sound), he also went on to record for other top notch labels as BBE. He is also the driving force behind groups like One Self and The Electric. He is definitely one of the handful of guys that widened my interest in leftfield beats.

Most importantly, on top of being a dope producer, Vadim is a really amazing dj. Thus, the name DJ VADIM. Check out one of his many mixes below.

MAK 10
No introduction needed. DJ MAK 10 is a pioneer in the UK GRIME scene. MAK’s career started with the infamous N.A.S.T.Y. CREW, which developed most of grimes biggest acts to date with the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Kano, Ghetto, D double E, Footsie , Monkee (Newham Generals), Jammer, JME, Skepta ,Dirty Goodz, Bruza ,Roll Deep, also brothers Lil Nasty and Griminal and many more. MAK 10 is a taste-maker and straight up’ burns other DJs. Attached is the recoding of MAK 10 2010, new years eve party, recorded live in Montreal.
:: Nasty FM / Sunday / 3-5

HYPER MC
HYPER is a legendary MC part of the original N.A.S.T.Y CREW. His spin on MC’ing influenced GRIME in a big way, representing the loud, easy-to-follow style jocked by the best MC’s like Skepta and Wiley. 3 years ago Hyper was asked to come do a Christmas day special on RINSE FM. He has been back and involved, ever since.

LIL NASTY
Little brother to Marcus Nasty, Mak 10, and Griminal, cousin to DJ Spyro, Terror Danjah, Nasty Jack and growing up around the whole N.A.S.T.Y. crew; you could say that Lil Nasty had a privileged upbringing. This past year Nasrt’ has gone to work, dropping his mixtape ‘Rock N Rolla’, starting the clothing line ‘Nasty By Nature’, and releasing a new single ‘BIG’ produced by Virgo. Lil Nasty is rated among the top MC’s at the moment.

FREEZA CHIN
Freeza Chin started as a lover’s rock/dancehall DJ in the late 90′s, so it’s no surprise that everything that he plays today is heavily ragga-influenced. Besides being a DJ, he is a well seasoned emcee. Being one third of the UKC crew, along with partners Plain English and Alki Riddimz, he has played a key part in laying the foundation of Toronto’s (and arguably Canada’s) thriving dubstep and grime scene. As one of the hardest working performers in country, he has shared the stage with the likes of Logan Sama, Joe Nice, D1, MRK1, Juakali, XI, Marcus Visionary, Benny Page, DZ, Sharmaji, Harry Shotta and many more.
:: Nasty FM / Friday / 7-9

TRE MISSION
Tre Mission broke into the UK Grime Scene in early 2010 with Freestyles over beats like Sukh Knight’s “Petrol not Diesel” and S-X’s “Woo Riddim”. Since then he frequents the UK, touring the city with BOY BETTA KNOW, representing Toronto, Canada. Rolling with Freeza Chin, Tre apparently heard about the line-up and wanted to come! This is a special unexpected guest! (A Halloween Miracle?!!)

DJ CONSTRUCT
Starting in Halifax 5 years ago as a DnB/Breaks promoter, he discovered Dubstep and propelled himself to the air waves of CKDU.ca 88.1FM for a 2 year stint before making moves to Montreal. Jumping on board with Vilify at Bass Drive Wednesdays and running two weekly radio shows at Sub.FM & Jungletrain.net, it wasn’t long before Constuct had rinsed all the biggest clubs & venues in Montreal. Performing on stage with acts such as Benga, Skream, Rusko, Goldie, Bassnectar, Chrispy, Borgore, and many more. He also takes care of international J’amie Le Dubstep.
:: Nasty FM / Wed / 7-9pm

E.S.L.
ESL Productions consists of Jennifer Wade (promotion, bookings, event-coordination) BUS (founder, DJ), Skinnybones (DJ, producer, graphic design) and Bowly aka DJ Sharivari (DJ, producer). A crew dedicated to popularizing UK sub-genres: Garage, Grime, Dubstep, Bassline, Jungle and UK Funky, amongst other fast moving classifications. Conceptually, the team works together to create unique events including MTL FUNKY and works with other crews in MTL to put on big NYE and other holiday raves. Outside of pushing new UK genres, the focus of the clique is to create positive vibes and a sense of community. With two producers and counting, rare dubs, and UK style mixing, the E.S.L. crew takes it, every time.

Lexis’ Birthday Jam!!

PURSUIT GROOVES (BROOKLYN, Tectonic/Rush Hour)
Pursuit Grooves (Vanese Smith) stands out from the rest not only as a female producer but as a music producer in general. Refusing to be defined or labeled she graciously accepts all of her influences to create something that is distinctly her own while owing much to the past. Inspiration includes soul/funk artists (Cameo, Sade, Loose Ends), trip hop gurus (Bjork, Massive Attack, Portishead) and hip hop producers (DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Jay Dee). She travels internationally performing a live show filled with her energetic beats via a hardware sampler and MC vocals that no one else on the scene delivers.

KENLO CRAQNUQUES
KenLo Craqnuques (aka Akena Lohamba Okoko) is a producer from Sainte-Foy, Québec, who’s been operating his beat spaceship since 2005. In 2007, he began releasing the free instrumental series entitled Craqnuques, which has so far issued seven colour series of random productions and broken loops (Noir, Bleu, Mauve, Orange, Rose, Brun and Turquoise). Lo also works on various online instrumental projects (Bullesbubbles I & II with VLooper (2009), Qwerty Musique : Mononucléose (2009), Cailloux Germés EP (2010) and has added some Montreal flavour to the Beat Dimensions vol. 2 (2009) compilation

SMOKED MEAT FAX MACHINE (Ancient Robot)
Smoked Meat Fax Machine is John Constantinides, an electronic musician, producer and DJ based in Montreal. He adopted the bizarre moniker when he began DJing at local clubs and loft parties in 2001, playing mainly deep funk records collected from his international crate-digging adventures. In 2007 Constantinides began crafting his own brand of funk-drenched electronic music, featuring juicy basslines, swerving arrangements and infectious, gritty synth hooks. He founded a label (http://ancientrobot.com/) to release his tracks, and it has since grown into an outlet for forward-thinking underground producers. The Smoked Meat Fax Machine live show currently features Constantinides on laptop/gear alongside drummer Mark Zadel.

Very happy to be a part of the launch of this new night.

A brand new experience taking the Blizzarts Sunday Night Bass concept to the year 3000, PROJECT has arrived. No overcooked heavy-metal chainsaws, no watered down electro-pop, PROJECT promises strictly the finest in uncompromised urban bass music combining slamming percussion, rattling sub-frequencies, quality production and a street-wise edge.

Genre doesn’t matter. Tempo doesn’t matter. Vibe matters and we at PROJECT promise you nothing but the dreadest of dread and the most euphoric of highs as we collide street culture to club culture.

Classic London Grime? We got it. Original Chicago Footwork? Check. A new concept of Deep House informed by the rudebwoy edge of UKG? Oh yeah. If you grew up on Hip-Hop, Acid House, Jungle and dark Garage and are ready for a night combining those influences into something brand new, welcome home.

We’re very happy to be bringing you our second “UK Garage 4 Ever” party. Also very excited to be doing this one with A-Rock and Dr.Love, two of the dudes who have been repping the UK Garage ting since the very start in Montreal! Also joining us on the bill will be Bowly, part of the ESL Crew, dope producer and gariiidge lover.

There is definitely a huge garage and 2step revival going on right now. The influence of UKG can be heard in tons of young producers like Falty DL, Jacques Greene, Julio Bashmore, Blawan, Ramadanman and so on. The legacy left by the glory days of UKG and producers like Steve Gurley, Tuff Jam, Booker T, Wookie, Sticky, Grant Nelson is still here and it also helps that you have guys like Zed Bias, El-B, MJ Cole all still making amazing music.

So anyyyways, all this to say that all four of us are all excited to hear some of our favorite classics in a loud system, the way UKG is meant to be enjoyed!

In the meantime, feel free to check out my mix from a few months ago called “UK Garage Classics part 1″, the part 2 will be released and given at the event (if all goes well!)

Don’t want to get too many emotional about this one but shit, this one is a dream come true for me. Like many hip-hop heads, in 2007 “Below the Heavens” came in at a time where I really needed to get excited about rap music again and it pretty much didn’t leave my record box for the next two years. Blu and Exile together conjure the same feeling for heads as Pete Rock & Cl Smooth. Since the early 2000′s both of them have put out some of the most interesting work in the game. Taking risks and working the angles on every project.

When I met Morgan who is part of Sofa King Raw a couple years ago, this was one of the first conversations we had “shit we should bring Blu and Exile”. Well, there you have it!

Just a little heads up to remind you that I will have the pleasure to be part of the Pop Montreal festival once again this year. This year i’ll share the bill with a Toronto’s XI and fellow MTL-er James Krown.

XI has already been to Montreal a couple times already (check out the video of his last Mutek performance below) but i’m looking forward to playing with a dude i’ve heard nothing but good things about. And well… his music speaks for itself: a lovely blend of futuristic techy riddims. A great mix of dubstep, IDM, garage, house and so on…

The show is part of the Indie Montreal showcase and will also feature great live acts starting at 19h30. Sandman Viper Command, Sweet Mother Logic, Cherry Chapsticks & Humans
September 23rd at 3 Minots

Set times:
12-1: James Krown
1-2: Lexis
2-3: XI

Not that playing a vinyl set is the whole point of my set or the night, it’s more about the appreciation of music whatever the hell format it’s in. But playing on weeknights has always been really fun for me, seems there are more people there for the music than the usual weekend pub crawl.

I’ll be playing with one of my favorite dudes in the city, Phil Sparkz who just put together an outstanding my called the 69ers, if you haven’t checked it!
Eglo Records label boss and Rinse Fm‘s most diverse selector, Alexander Nut has made a name for himself blending all corners of the contemporary music spectrum into a glimmering prism of late-night futurism, regularly filling Saturday afternoon’s with a mutant brew of bass heavy sounds from hip hop to house to dubstep and beyond, showcasing a plethora of producers with a mixing style all his own. His label Eglo Records (co-run with Floating Points) has fast become a byword for eclectic quality and continues to push the musical envelope with contrasting releases from Floating Points, Funkineven, Mizz Beats, Fatima and Arp 101. In 2009 Nut release the 8th in the Rinse mix CD series, which was voted No.3 in Phonica’s top 100 releases of the year. A regular at FWD, Plastic People, Deviation and Fabric.

After a couple of weeks off Piknic is back this sunday (praying to the sun god). Three of the dopest producers in the game (and also three of my personal favorites) will be sharing the stage at Piknic Electronik, Montreal’s now famous sunday hangout spot.

Back in may when the Piknic lineup for the summer of 2011 came out a lot of people instantly circled this one on their calendar. And that was even before Scuba was added to the line-up a couple of weeks ago!

The fit between these three is just so well thought out because although all three belong to the UK underground family, they definitely bring different takes on it:

Scuba has his techno flavour mixed with the new school UK-isms, Addison Groove does the whole Juke / 808 revival thing while Appleblim is just that perfect blend of tracks for the steppers and the dub heads.

Set times:
14:00
Dorobo
16:00
Appleblim
18:00
Addison Groove (Live)
19:30
Scuba

Montreal has been waiting a few months for this and now it’s here!

5$ before 11:30pm – 8$ cover after

verrrry special guest
LEFTO (Brownswood Records, Belgium)

Lefto is derived from the French ‘leve tot,’ meaning early riser, received his first set of turntables in 1996, which his father bought for him on a bank loan, and he has not turned back since. On the look out for new opportunities, he was first discovered in Brussels by the Music Mania Record Store that has established a nationally respected name for discovering the best in new DJ talents. On their payroll for six years, he then moved on to being the main DJ and host of De Hop, the only nationally broadcasted Hip Hop radio show in Brussels for more than nine years.

As well as being a talented DJ, Lefto is Co-President of the Brussels based label B9000 (BE) and has released many albums as well as contributed to many releases across the world. Amongst those are the Eardrums EP with Jerboa, a contribution to the Nine compilation (distributed by Rush Hour) and a remix-album for the world-famous Blue Note label titled ‘Out Of the Blue’.

Among his fans is world renowned DJ Gilles Peterson who praises Lefto’s eclecticism and tight mixing skills. He made him a part of the Brownswood family and an official resident of the Worldwide Festivals, as well as a regular writer for the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Blog.
