Future Classic: Diamond Ortiz “Calling All Squares”

Soul & Funk

For this week’s Voyage Funktastique show, I had a special guest in the studio: Scott C of The Goods collective in Montreal. On my part of the show, I absolutely wanted to play the latest release on MoFunk Records by Diamond Ortiz. I just received 2 copies of his 45, which includes Zooted, and Calling All Squares on the flip side (which is the one I played in this week’s show). Calling All Squares has that Cali “all up in your face” sound, that G-Funk flavour, with heavy high-pitched synths and a nasty bassline, that will teletransport you back to Oakland, in 1993.

Diamond Ortiz is part of the MoFunk Records roster, along with XL Middleton, Moniquea and Eddy Funkster; they are releasing a lot of quality records (having all of them with the exception of Keep It Funkin’). XL Middleton has lately collaborated a guest mix for MIMS as well (Check it out here). The future is bright for this California-based label, so make sure you’re on the lookout for their next releases
