Ok, so maybe this one isn’t “forgotten” as such. An amazing tune from De La Soul’s ‘Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump’ but the fact that this came out in 2000 (!) and that it was never an official single qualifies it for us. (We make up our own rules ha!)
I dug this one out after listening to J Dilla’s ‘Another Batch’ and recognising the beat on Track 5. It’s great downloading a mixtape by J Dilla or DJ Premier, for example, and realising they’ve made the beats to some great hip-hop tunes which you’ve been listening to for years. In both cases, the list goes on and on. De La Soul + J Dilla clearly = a guaranteed head-nodder.
Fun tidbit on this one though: There is a New York / Detroit / Montreal connection! De La Soul (from NY) were backed by production from Dilla (Detroit) who used a sample from Cheri, a Montreal disco band. Definitely one of our favorite Dilla sample flips.
