Future Classic: DJ Day “Mama Shelter”

Soul

The good homie, DJ Day, has a new album dropping soon, and to say I’m ecstatic is an understatement. On top of being a world class producer that garners praise from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Jeremy Sole and Lefto, Day, hands down, is one of the best DJ’s on the planet. When you’re travelling the world rocking the infamous Do-Over parties, you’re doing something right, and that’s the best way to sum up DJ Day: he does everything the right way. Wether it be on the cut, in the studio, or rocking a party anywhere on the globe, DJ Day will do it with full precision and mastery. I’ve witnessed his skills and precision on separate occasions; once in Palm Springs DJing his night at the Ace, and secondly when we had him play our night in Vancouver at The Payback. I always knew what he was about musically, but to see him first hand in action is pretty inspiring. The dude is as technical as any turntablist out there, and he knows how to keep the party moving, blending classic cuts with the new, as well as obscure/forgotten gems of years past.

On top of being your favourite DJ’s DJ, Day is a producer that covers the full spectrum of funk, soul, jazz and hip-hop. His first album, 2007’s “The Day Before“, is a prime example of his musical sensibilities, and when you’re working with the likes of Aloe Blacc and Exile, you know you’re good at your craft. His diversity lends itself to his remix efforts as well. I think when you get commissioned to do a remix for heavyweights such as Quantic, Alice Russell and People Under The Stairs, you’re really spreading your wings and showing your various capabilities in the studio.

The first preview off the new album, “Mama Shelter‘, is a nice jazz infused piece that’s reminiscent of the jazz/funk fusion era of the 70’s, alluding to something from the Black Jazz catalogue. It’ll definitely wet your appetite and leave you anticipating the full length release.

Here’s what his label, Piecelock 70 had to say about his upcoming release:

“Day’s second album release for “Land of 1000 Chances” will be released on February 12th via Thes One’s PL70 imprint. Drawn from personal struggles and Day’s hometown of Palm Springs, CA, “Land of 1000 Chances” finds Day circling back to what he knows best, DJing, his expert knowledge of records, with some drums and keys.

Garnering interest and spins from radio like KCRW, Gilles Peterson and East Village Radio, “Land of 1000 Chances” is Day’s most personal work to date.

Today, enjoy hearing the song “Mama Shelter,” referencing the famous hotel in Paris, France and the travels worldwide that helped shaped this album.

For vinyl heads, “Land of 1000 Chances” was mastered by the legendary, Bernie Grundman, and will be limited to 1000 units. The vinyl features a PETA approved alternative leather and a handmade casebound cover with foil stamping. Each LP is adorned with a removable Polaroid photograph on the front and custom wrapped!”
