Future Classics: Ali the son of Abdul – The Karma series

Beats

Written by Max Robin:

Simplicity is sometimes the way. If we are talking about beats, a break and some crisp drums is all you really need. That’s exactly what Canadian rapper/beatmaker Ali the son of Abdul does in his Karma EP serie. (By the way, they are all available as free downloads). Like me, you may have heard of him for his intimate and original EP YEAR OF THE SATELLITE back in 2010.

So back to basics. The breaks have a middle eastern feel to them without being typical. Ali doesn’t just loop them endlessly but changes them as they goes which keep things interesting. The drum are basic drumloops but effective. At first, I wished there was some kind of bass line but I think the beauty of those beats are in their simplicity and a bassline would only complicate things.

Max Robin is a towntempo kind of guy. He loves beats. Making them, sampling them, shaking them, baking them, spinning them, radio hosting them,... He releases a beat a day at 30bpm.com. Oh and he's also 1/2 of wobbly affair Pax Kingz with Millimetrik and 1/2 of irreverent french rap duo MC Phylis et Maxime Robin. Oh que oui!
