Future Classic: Mowgli “93”

Hip-Hop

Finally, the very anticipated first record from the UK’s MOWGLI has landed, in my mailbox! Big thanks to my homie from across the pond for the upfront promo copy…

Let me start off by saying it was worth the wait. Mowgli could have rushed into things and put out his first record 2 years ago… he had more than enough great material and he was being praised by magazines like Straight No Chaser (the very last issue had a feature on him, that’s how I discovered him). Instead, he decided to take his time. The result is 25 tracks and one of the best Hip-Hop albums to ever come out of the UK.

It has all the elements of UK hip-hop that I love, most importantly, that it doesn’t sound like anything else. It’s kind of when you first heard Roots Manuva, Ty, or “Original Pirate Material” by the Streets. Let me get this straight, i’m not comparing Mowgli to any of these cats. I’m just pointing out that it gives you the same feeling on first listen… Big!
