Future Classic: Ryan Hemsworth “Last Words”

Beats

What I like the most about this time of year (no, it’s not eggnog) is that I can catch up on some music I might have missed; one exemple is the Last Words EP by Ryan Hemsworth, a 9 track affair that was released in September (although at 37 minutes, it’s longer than many full albums). 5 new tracks and 4 remixes including one by label mate Shlohmo. “Overthinking” was featured on the monthly MIMS Radio Show #59 back in September.

Spacey instrumental electronic beats influenced by the trap / poppy aesthetic and tons of lush synth pads. It reminds me of an instrumental version of up and coming Montreal artist, Black Atlass and the sensibility of yet another MTL group, Purity Ring.

That being said, Last Words is not Hemswoth’s first explorations of those territories. It seems like he was searching on past projects but now found a cohesive sound making this his most interresting music to date. The future should be quite interesting! By the way, check his track on the Booty Based Mob (volume one) compilation, via the Montreal Booty Bakers crew. It’s worth the listen!

Max Robin is a towntempo kind of guy. He loves beats. Making them, sampling them, shaking them, baking them, spinning them, radio hosting them,... He releases a beat a day at 30bpm.com. Oh and he's also 1/2 of wobbly affair Pax Kingz with Millimetrik and 1/2 of irreverent french rap duo MC Phylis et Maxime Robin. Oh que oui!
