You Better Think Twice

Hip-Hop Jazz

Even though sampling sources are always a great discussion and quest for any respecting hip-hop head I don’t do very much of that stuff on the website. Probably because tons of other websites do a really good job of focusing just on that subject. (Try WhoSampled.com and The-Breaks.com). I wanted to share some versions of one of my favorite sampled tracks of all time. I love it so much that almost any recreation of it is a hit for me…

“Think Twice” is a track from Donald Byrd‘s 1974 album on Blue Note records called “Stepping Into Tomorrow”. It was produced by the Mizell Brothers who are the most recognized production team in the 70’s Jazz Fusion era. First off, i’m not going to bore you with the fact that Donald Byrd recorded about 25 solo records on Blue Note and was part of some of the biggest jazz groups… One thing you should know however is that his real name is: Donaldson Toussaint L’Ouverture Byrd II ! Now isn’t that the most pimpish name ever?!!

Donald Byrd - Think Twice (1974)

Here are some of the best renditions of “Think Twice”. I would say my two favorite ones are: #1) Detroit Experiment (produced by Techno pioneer Carl Craig). #2) Jay-Dee

Jazzy Jeff ft. J-Live - Practicce
