Forgotten Treasures

Forgotten Treasure: Metalheads “Terminator” (1992)

I don’t know how this nugget came to into my mind, but I was just in a digging and digging phase for new stuff to put on the MIMS Radio Show and I started to listen to all these new releases paying “homage” to elements of the early 90’s dance scene. There seems to be a fascination (including fashion also) with that period these days.

So allow me to reintroduce this Jungle classic called “Terminator” by Metalheadz aka Goldie, it is a cult classic for D&B and Jungle heads but there is definitely a Hardcore / Rave thing going on here. This track is one of the first and best examples in the use of timestretching made possible by that classic AKAI sampler everyone used at the time. The effect would be copied multiple times after that one.

But after the sample of Sarah Connor from Terminator announcing, “You’re talking about things I haven’t done yet”, a whole new sonic phase space opens up: worlds within whorls of rhythm. Terminator isn’t just sampled here: the film’s theme of time loops is translated into breakbeat science in which we seem to hear time itself being engineered. Beats no longer keep time but dilate, fold and implode it.

Heeee. Warning: This is a pretty intense jam, so make sure you’re ready for it!
