Forgotten Treasures

Strong Souls “Sensual Let’s Work” (1993)

House / Techno

This one is really close to my heart. A very obscure release that I’m very surprised that very few people play. Strong Souls is a rare Larry Heard project that was released on Black Market in 1993. That release followed his essential LP on major label MCA and a few other underground releases under the Club Ice alias. The rarity of this track might be due to the fact that this 12′ was never repressed unlike some others Larry Heard / Mr. Fingers releases on Black Market.

This track is somehow a bit different than the smoother, jazzier and moodier Deep House he was producing around 1992-1993. It’s a very subtle, seductive, minimalistic affair, but a slamming stormer at the same time. A heavy kick drum, a loud baseline, some sparse keys and a sexy spoken word are the main elements here. Handled by Larry Heard, this is pure magic in the making. The vocals are credited to Twanna X, but the voice actually sounds like it’s Larry Heard himself massaging our ears… That could be quite possible since he did most of the vocals work by himself on his “Introduction” LP a year prior that. His sweet silky voice was even compared to Sade back then. (That was a cool 20 years before Rhye!!!)

A devastating late night / early morning anthem (well, at least for me!!!) that should to be play real loud in a dark room at some warehouse / loft situations!!!
