Producer and multi-instrumentalist J-Felix has recently won hearts with the future blend of boogie, p-funk, disco and soul on his second album ‘Whole Again Hooligan’ on Tru Thoughts Recordings. So much so we were compelled to ask him for a mix and he delivered in fine fashion in no time. Here’s what he had to say about it.
@MrJFelix: I used the opportunity to showcase a lot of recent material from my new album, Whole Again Hooligan in this mix, starting with the title track, moving through Hip-Hop and other examples of Modern Funk including a Swindle and Daley collaboration.
I included some Hip-Hop from the ‘Bad Neighbour’ project Madlib put together featuring Anderson Paak and Blu as well as Little brother featuring Phonte and De La Soul featuring Snoop Dogg! I threw some Prince in there for good measure from his underrated album, Musicology and some classic modern Funk biz from Dam-Funk and more of that flavour from B Bravo.
Some UK material in the form of Children of Zeus. Choppy soul from Mark de Clive-Lowe featuring Nia Andrews and Daz-I-Kue under his BB Boogie alias, from his fantastic album, Standing on The Wall. More classic material from Edwin Birdsong eventually into some Kaytranada then I finish the mix with the title track of my forthcoming Cover/ Remix EP, ‘Be Thankful for What You’ve Got’ feat. Sol Goodman.
I take inspiration from across the soulful spectrum, and I like to think this mix shows a bit of that. If I had longer, I would usually step this up a bit into Boogie/ disco territory and then maybe some house and broken beat and beyond! This is the sort of thing I would start at Patterns with.
