Photay “Gilles Peterson Worldwide Mix”

via Gilles Peterson Worldwide: “One glimpse at Photay’s debut EP cover and you’re not likely to forget it in a hurry. A simple composition, it simply features Photay (Evan Shornstein to his mother) as a young whippersnapper, proudly sporting an outrageously impressive afro. Even if we were to judge a book by it’s cover, we’d have no issues warming to Photay, but thankfully his music also leaves as lasting an impression.

Surrounded by music from around the world at an early age and drumming for various school bands, Shornstein’s early years weren’t too out of the ordinary for an aspiring musician; except of course for his upbringing in the near mythical town of Woodstock, in upstate New York. Where else in the world could a school band support Blondie and The Wailers when they came to town?

The thick textures of Flying Lotus, Aphex Twin and DJ Shadow made an impression while finding his feet as a producer, while a month-long trip to West Africa to learn local drumming techniques leant Photay its percussive core. Coincidentally, it also inspired his name – Photay meaning ‘white person’ in Guinean dialect Susu. On his recent EP for Astro Nautico, 90’s IDM merges with pop sensibilities and exotic drum arrangements for an engagingly original debut.

For his GPWW guest mix, Photay looks back as much as forward, calling on masters like Laraaji and Dizzy Gillespie and also teasing some unreleased material of his own.”
