Forgotten Treasure: Aaliyah “If Your Girl Only Knew” (The New Remix) (1996)

We here at MIMS would love to send out a warm thought to Aaliyah who would have celebrated her 34th birthday today. She left much too soon (at age 22) and we can only imagine all amazing music she could have put out…

There have been a ton of remixes, tributes, covers since her passing, most of which we don’t really care for. But here is one we always loved. It was on the B-side of the “If Your Girl Only Knew” 12′ single, labeled only as the “new remix“, for a while we thought it was a Timbaland remix but it turns out it was by Darkchild.

In case you’re wondering, the glorious sample used for the remix is Portishead’s “Numb” (below) which came out only a year before Aaliyah’s track which proves that Timbo, Aaliyah and that camp had a pretty open mind when it came to listening to dope music in general. Missy almost ruins the track for me but I always manage to mix it out before I get to her part hehe…
