Future Classic: C2C “Down the Road EP”

Beats

For a week now, I’ve been listening non-stop to the new C2C EP and I don’t really know why. It’s not that I don’t like the concept of groups made up of scratch DJs (the other scratch group from France, Birdy Nam Nam comes to mind) but mastery of an instrument usually means pretty boring and sometimes nerdy music. It seems like putting time in mastering an instrument takes the focus away from composing really great compelling music.

That being said, the C2C EP is quite fun. A bit more upbeat and melodious than your typical scratch record. It reminds of when I first heard Kid Koala‘s Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. Of course, the music is different but the fact that it makes scratch look fun is the same. The video at the end of this post is quite something. It may be the darkest song of the bunch but it’s more of a respectful and contemplative mood than a emo powered chant.

(For all you music geeks, C2C member 20syl who is the co-director of this video, is also part of jazzy french hiphop band, Hocus Pocus.)

Max Robin is a towntempo kind of guy. He loves beats. Making them, sampling them, shaking them, baking them, spinning them, radio hosting them,... He releases a beat a day at 30bpm.com. Oh and he's also 1/2 of wobbly affair Pax Kingz with Millimetrik and 1/2 of irreverent french rap duo MC Phylis et Maxime Robin. Oh que oui!
