Future Classic: Homeboy Sandman “Subject: Matter” (EP)

Hip-Hop

One of the labels best ever at picking up underground talent, Stones Throw Records (Madlib, Peanut Butter Wolf, J-Dilla, James Pants, Jonwayne, Dam Funk, Oh No,…) do it again and sign Homeboy Sandman (one of my favorite indie american MC’s).

Listening to the homeboy’s third album, The Good Sun, it’s clear that he’s hungry for the type of sound that Peanut Butter Wolf’s label is known for. His delievery is a bit less in your face and a bit more funky on this first EP on the legendary label. No grand gestures here (beside being taller then some), he keeps it simple and does what he does best: Rhyming.

Actually, all you need to know is on the cover of the EP. “6 rap songs with content no one has ever rapped about before in the history of rap music. Unfortunately not a very difficult thing to do.” (Link to read the hi-res cover).

The EP certainly does its job and leaves us wanting more from a possible future LP. Nice sample on the preview track remind us of Deltron 3030 a little…

Homeboy Sandman wrote & recorded this exclusive track “Subject Matter Out Now” to announce the release of his first Stones Throw Records EP “Subject: Matter”. It’s out now. This is produced by Audio Games. http://stonesthrow.com/homeboysandman

Max Robin is a towntempo kind of guy. He loves beats. Making them, sampling them, shaking them, baking them, spinning them, radio hosting them,... He releases a beat a day at 30bpm.com. Oh and he's also 1/2 of wobbly affair Pax Kingz with Millimetrik and 1/2 of irreverent french rap duo MC Phylis et Maxime Robin. Oh que oui!
