Future Classic: Zap Francis “Zap Francis EP”

Beats

Just when you thought instrumental / experimental hip-hop and the so-called “beats” scene was dead and burried, an EP from a mysterious young artist from Detroit comes along and reminds me to not give up on this scene that used to inspire me so much.

The 6 track EP from Zap Francis is released by Computer Ugly Records, the label behind Detroit rapper & producer Black Milk who is also apparently the first to play some of ZF’s productions on his Boiler Room set.

The fantastic EP definitely has the atmosphere of a sci-fi movie score and is slightly reminiscent of past productions by masters Prefuse 73, Dabrye and two recent examples would be Nosaj Thing and Fulgeance.

6 extremely strong tracks that are different enough to make you want to listen to the whole EP from start to finish (and back again) because they’re aren’t any real standouts for me just yet. This is meant to be played on the very best sound system or headphones you can find. Respect goes to Daddy Kev on the splendid mastering job.
