Jazz

With less than one day until the start of the Montreal Jazz Fest, here are my festival picks for this years’ edition. Here are a  few shows i’m looking forward to.

Gregory Porter | Thursday, June 28, 2012 – 9:00 PM
L’Astral  – $33.12 with taxes and fees

This Grammy Nominee for ‘Best vocal jazz’ had the attention he deserve over the last few month. Gregory Porter will offer a concert with song from his latest album ‘Be Good’ and his debut album ‘Water’. Here’s a little teaser video:

The Souljazz Orchestra  | Monday, July 02, 2012 – 9:00 or 11:00 PM
Scène TD – Free outside show

This afro jazz collective from Ottawa will certainly offer a high energy show for the montreal crowd. I remember discovering the canadian band while I was listening to the Gilles Peterson Radioshow back in 2006. The soul jazz orchestra will offer music from their latest album ‘Rising Sun’.

Jazz Amnesty Sound System (J.A.S.S.) | Monday, July 02, 2012 – 11:59 PM or Tuesday, July 03, 2012 – 11:59 PM
L’Astral  – Free open house

Long time lover of their Mixcloud Cloudcast, I’m trilled to know that they are feature on the Montreal Jazz Fest because they play the kind of jazz I want to listen: authentic jazz. Founded by DJ Andy Williams & DJ sweet daddy luv, J.A.S.S. mixes are the result of incredible jazz music diggin into the evolution jazz through big band, swing, bop, dancefloor, avant-garde, fusion, funk and electronic. As they say: ‘If you dig jazz you’ll dig J.A.S.S.’

DJ Lexis, The Goods and DJ Jürgen (from Jazzanova)

Saturday, July 07, 2012 – 10:00 PM
Métropolis – FREE!

There’s three reason to attend this show. First, it’s time to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the creation of the Music Is My Sanctuary website, radio show and family. We will have the opportunity to listen to the eclectic selection from MIMS founder, DJ Lexis all pumped from his european tour. Second, we will have the chance celebrate the 10 years anniversary of The Goods created by DJs Scott C and Andy Williams. Finally, a special DJ set from DJ Jürgen von Knoblauch from Jazzanova will end the party pretty nicely with a wide variety of broken beat, nu-jazz and jazz-dance track.
