Forgotten Treasure: The ‎Prunes “Tracks From The Darkside” (1995)

Beats Hip-Hop

Post from Lexis: “Whenever I’m invited to do a guest session on the great WEFUNK radio show I try to put together a selection that probably hasn’t been done before.

And when you’re talking about a show that’s been going strong since 1996 it’s not easy to do something new. But as you know “themed” mixes is something I love taking on.

So for this most recent contribution to the WEFUNK show I decided to put together a session which I could call something like “Bristol / 1994 State of Mind“. So what we’re talking about here is: 1994 only selections mostly based on trip-hop and abstract beats with a few hip-hop joints too.

I played a track called “KMW” from a Danish hip-hop production team called The Prunes. The trio of producers came together in 1991 in Copenhagen and went on to drop a 1995 album “Tracks from the Darkside” as well as remixes for the Beastie Boys, DJ Krush and DJ Vadim that got worldwide attention. “KMW” is a great track of jazzy blunted vibes I discovered through my friend Scott C of The Goods. That discovery led me to dig into the New Breed label under which it was released.

One I started out checking out all the great releases from DJ Smash and all the Fat Jazzy Grooves compilation I really felt like i’d been sleeping on a goldmine of 90’s instrumental hip-hop releases. I strongly suggest you check out the New Breed back catalogue! (Link)
