Forgotten Treasure: Five Stairsteps “Danger She’s a Stranger” (1967)

Soul

The Five Stairsteps were the original ‘First Family of Soul’ (before the J5) and literally grew up through the Chicago Soul tradition. Danger! She’s a Stranger features mature harmonies from a group of tweens and the song itself is a risky attempt at hovering between melancholic and joyful tones.

The intro sends chills down my spine everytime I play it and it’s one of those records that you keep your finger near the needle to repeat it at least once. No surprise it was sampled by Outkast for ‘2 dope boys and a Cadillac’. A deep soul track that sounds great on 45, but is worth catching on LP for more great arragements.

If you like this track and album then we strongly recommend this mix from Matthew Africa dedicated to kiddie soul. (Link)
