Future Classic: Voyage Funktastique Vol.1

Beats Soul & Funk

Compilations are best when they help you discover a whole new genre, feature varied artists and are put together, the right way, by someone whose passion for the genre borders on obsessive. The final point might be the key to the success of the Voyage Funktastique Vol.1 released on MIMS fam Walla P’s label.

Walla’s incessive grind on both radio and DJ boothes has always been fueled by taking Modern/Future Funk to the world and having us discover that the movement is truly international. This excellent compilation features artists from all over the globe: Temu (Sweden) Amin Payne (Australia), S-Boogy (Germany) & my favorite discovery Midnight Runners from Indonesia (the boogie scene in Indonesia is insane!). It starts off with an Ode To funk pioneer Bootsy Collins by Temu who also closes the comp with the VF theme song. Then Vol.1 let’s us simmer in synth until a truly magical passage that includes Quebec’s own beat veteran KenLo and the gorgeous stripped down sound of Buscrates 16-bit Ensemble layered over some incredible suave vocals.

We are chilling in our open collar leather jacke,t until Tuuwa takes us for another ride on the dancefloor with Turn Me On followed by LowDown’s aptly titled Night Glide as we drive away in our 87 silver Camaro and 4ROG’s melodic grooves float in the back of our mind, thinking back on another incredible voyage we embarked on through this stellar compilation. Walla’s vision for this comp is fully accomplished, as the listener gets to experience all the different nuances and grooves of Future/Modern Funk and just dance to the handclapping bangers. The icing on the cake is the sweet artwork that brings the whole concept together. With plans of limited 45 releases, DJs and music fans around the world should rejoice and support Voyage Funktastique in all its forms.
