Forgotten Treasures

Forgotten Treasure: The Jammers “Be Mine Tonight” (1982)

Disco Soul & Funk

Disco is a goldmine for heart melting romantic themed music, and in light of this upcoming lover’s holiday, I thought I would share one of my favorites. It’s not a conventional Valentine’s Day song but I think the message is pretty clear.

The opening line is what does it for me, “Looking better than MONEY! and the best Mercedes too, just a taste of your honey, is all a man can want from you!”

It’s too perfect!

Disco has a way of being extremely cheesy and extremely raw at the same time, conveying through the simplest lyrics a passionate message. The Jammers’ Be Mine Tonight is a not so subtle recipe for a sexy throw down and Richie Weeks literally breaks it down for you, play by play.

Be Mine Tonight is a Boogie dance hit with a catchy beat and if you make it past the 4 minute mark, there’s a fantastic break that’s hard not to dance to. Released in 1982 on Salsoul Records, it features vocals by Debra Blackwell and Sheldon Weeks and was mixed by the well known Shep Pettibone. The Jammers was the production of Richie Weeks, who was also a member of Weeks & Co. (another great Disco band) and like so many others in the 80’s, only had the one hit with The Jammers.

With that, I leave you to listen to this fine Boogie track and wish you all a happy Valentine’s Day!
