Future Classic: Smokey Robotic – HotBrass (Video)

I originally found out about Smokey Robotic about a year ago, when the big homie and fellow connoisseur DJ Sagewondah was touting them as that next-level shit. Knowing his acumen for these sort of things, I took heed and they’ve since become a personal favorite of mine. The group consists of songwriter/vocalists Father Dude and Seer as well as producers Konrad “OldMoney” and !llmind. Despite having a hyper-polished, “fresh outta jail” sheen to their sound, dubbed Superfuture, SR have remained largely below the radar, save for a couple of high profile joints (pardon the pun) with Redman, Skyzoo and Mr. Ganja Smuggling himself, Eek-A-Mouse. The HotBrass video caps off an already-productive 2011 with the kind of stuff hipster dreams are made of.

In July, Smokey Robotic released their sophomore set, The Shark & the Helicopter, which can be streamed via the band’s SoundCloud. Fully embracing the DIY ethos, they’ve made the vast majority of their catalogue available for free download on their fan page. Confirming that hard work pays off, they’ve recently seen their song Superfuturisticmusicmakingpeoplehappy play the backdrop in Movado‘s ad campaign for their new Bold series. Pseudo-intellectuals raging against the machine, sit down. Even Che Guevara had a Rolie.

The spaceship is showing no signs of landing anytime soon, as they’re already back in the lab conjuring up their next full-length outing. Rumors of a collaborative EP with New York rap trio NinjaSonik being in the works have also begun to surface. To the victor go the spoils. Get familiar.
