Forgotten Treasure: Public Enemy “Air Hoodlum” (1992)

The relationship between basketball and hip-hop to me is almost as close as breakdancing and graffiti. Or maybe it’s just because I grew up playing basketball and rap music was just the soundtrack to my life back then.

Since it’s March Madness season I figured I’d dig for a Hip-Hop / Basketball track. For those who don’t know what the March Madness is, it’s the 64 team annual US College Basketball tournament, and a pretty big deal.

This track from Public Enemy isn’t very well known, in fact I don’t think it ever came out on a proper record, just their “Greatest Misses” album. Anyway, as you’ll be able to tell from the lyrics it’s a track about kids growing up playing basketball when their only option in life is making it to the NBA… Aiiiiiir Hoodlum!
