First of all, I need to inform MIMS readers that I’ve known E1000 aka Emile Gauthier for quite some time. After I moved to Quebec City (the second time), we used to organize the Hiphop is Dead nights and we co-hosted the radio show by the same name. We played what some people classified as “abstract” hiphop mixed with some new electronic sounds. I could write a post about the show but that is not the point because E1000 has just released a new album called Strange Fruits. (yeah, french speakers may understand the word play behind the name)

A strange fruit indeed this album is. It’s hard to compareit to anything other than simply E1000’s work because it is in a category of its own. Dancey yet experimental. For those familiar with his music, he keeps it in the same vein here. I would say “Dubstep” if it doesn’t give you a “skrillex” reference. Nonetheless, it’s certainly bassy and got complex rhythms. Maybe there are more voices here and there but don’t expect anything like the full verses he rapped on previous Anachronic XP work (one of his previous bands).

There is also some remixes on the album by the likes of Poison & Dagger (Louis Levon and E1000), Archibald Singleton (The Gulf Stream), Arbee (also fron Anachronic XP), Arablondies, P West, Ahllex and, of course, Pax Kingz (Millimetrik and me). The remixes bring out things that are already there; some are more dancefloor, some are more ambient but they all fit well with the main album tracks because of that.

Please help yourself to those fruits and listen to some!

Max Robin is a towntempo kind of guy. He loves beats. Making them, sampling them, shaking them, baking them, spinning them, radio hosting them,... He releases a beat a day at 30bpm.com. Oh and he's also 1/2 of wobbly affair Pax Kingz with Millimetrik and 1/2 of irreverent french rap duo MC Phylis et Maxime Robin. Oh que oui!
