Forgotten Treasure: Sergio Cuevas “The Artistry of Sergio Cuevas” (1969)

Tuesday morning mystery: Who is Sergio Cuevas? Seriously, we would really like to know. There’s a surprisingly insignificant amount of online information regarding this legendary musician, so if any of our readers out there have any leads, you know where to reach us.

Here’s what we’ve found so far:

Sergio was born in Villarica, Paraguay (1939). He is regarded as one of the best Paraguayan harpists of his time, alongside Luis Bordón, Alfredo Rolando Ortiz, Luis Alberto de Parana, etc.

The Paraguayan harp (also debatably known as “The Indian Harp” ) is the official instrument of Paraguay and a symbol of national identity. It has also apparently become a sex toy. In 1958, the government selected Sergio as the country’s Ambassador of music at Miami’s Festival of Latin American Music.

He toured South Africa with Sophie Tucker in 1962. Hopefully some other clues will surface, but for now here are 3 beautiful tracks I chose off this 2xLP (on Barclay) which greatly represent his skill, charm and creativity. Enjoy!
